Once the dominant shallow water coral in the Caribbean, Acroporid corals (genus Acropora) have seen a dramatic decline in the past 30 years. Using cutting edge technology like DNA genotyping, GIS spatial analysis and underwater surveys, the Smithsonian's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program is looking at the underlying drivers of mortality and regeneration in these threatened corals in Belize.
